“The Color of Courage—A Boy at War: The World War II Diary of Julian Kulski.” Foreword by Lech Wałęsa, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. Introduction by Rabbi Michael Schudrich, Chief Rabbi of Poland.
This remarkable diary follows Julian Kulski, a 10-year-old Boy Scout when WWII begins. At age 12, Kulski is recruited into the clandestine Underground Army by his scoutmaster and begins training in military tactics and weapons handling. At 13, he accompanies his commander on a secret mission into the Warsaw Ghetto. He is arrested by the Gestapo at age 14, but is rescued from near certain death at Auschwitz. By the age of 15, he joins the 9th Commando Company and fights in the Warsaw Uprising. Kulski ends the war as a 16-year-old POW—finally risking a dash for freedom onto an American truck instead waiting for "liberation" by the Soviets.
Winner: GOLD (for Best Interior Design) and SILVER (for Best Autobiography/Memoir) Awards at the 2015 Benjamin Franklin Awards, the most prestigious awards competition in independent publishing.
A Selection of the History Book Club and the Military Book Club.
